WHY STOP SMOKING! - WHY?

To someone who hasn’t smoked, the question “why stop smoking?” may seem a little odd, its obvious right? Well yes & no. To be frank some of the reasons for letting go are obvious & others need thinking about. Some people just won’t give themselves the time or spend the effort to consider them at all. Let’s face it that’s why many of you are reading the info on this site.

There is no shame in being lazy with some things & in the busy world we live in we all tend to look for simple easy options. I know I do! The sad thing about becoming free from tobacco is that there is no easy solution, when you boil all the methods & solutions down the final result is that it’s up to you.

By reading the information in this section I hope to provide a step by step process that makes the act of becoming free from tobacco easier for everyone, I provide insight into solutions that may help you along the way, & you may choose various methods that support each other to create success.

So why give up smoking? Read each of the following sections one at a time, then close your eyes & imagine yourself in that situation.

You may want to give up for personal reasons. You may not realize that for one reason or another unknowingly to you have become mildly disliked to be around by friends, family & colleagues. It’s nothing dreadful but it may make a difference to you relationships.

A lady I shall call Julie (not her real name) had been noticing for some time that people kept a little distant from her. When she sat at a table with friends she noticed that the seats furthest away got filled first. Julie had had several short relationships one after the other, & although everything was progressing nicely for no apparent reason both relationships broke down, she did not understand why & assumed that the boyfriends had met someone else.

She was confused but happy enough, until one day she met her boyfriend but one, he was gorgeous, her ideal man. He approached & said hello, they got chatting & Julie felt all the love she had had before come racing to the surface. She began to hope & wondered if they could see each other again, she got up courage, tempted fate & asked. Julies boyfriend was polite, unbeknown to Julie he had deep feeling for her, but this is what he said. Julie I wish that I had it in me to overcome my aversion to the smell of stale tobacco. I love you very much & cried deeply when I had to let you down the last time. I care for you & I know that although I want to be with you it’s hopeless. You see no matter how hard I tried I cannot put up with the smell of your tobacco. It’s in your clothes, on your breath & quite frankly it makes me feel sick. I just can’t help it. I would try again but I know it’s hopeless & I don’t want to let you down again as I know how much it hurt me. I’m sorry. He left. Julie was speechless.

This happens with men & woman, the only thing is most people never find out.

When you smoke your clothes, skin hair & breathe smell. To some people you stink. Nobody’s going to tell you that though. I only highlight it here to be helpful.

Your teeth yellow & over time, subconsciously, your smile gets smaller.

You may want to give up smoking for your family or for family reasons. It may simply be because your wife or husband has given up & you wish to create better harmony between you, or it may be because you wish to improve your children’s health & longevity. You may simply want to be there when they marry.

This is a true story, it’s mine so I know it’s true.

My daughter had for many years suffered with chest problems when she got a cold, One year she was so bad we called out a locum GP who diagnosed asthma. My wife had suspected such for some time but our regular GP never saw our daughter when she was acute & suffering. When she was in her mid teens my wife & I tried to give up smoking, we only managed about a month but during that period the daughter suffered a cold. It was immediately apparent that she did not suffer as usual & my wife who is a little more astute than me put it down to us not smoking in the house. So from that day on, although we both started smoking again we never smoked in the house or any confined space where the daughter was also near. Our daughter has not suffered from a chesty cold or had any signs of asthma since. That’s about twenty years ago now. It was some years later we succeeded & I will include our methods within.

You may want to give up smoking to maintain or improve your health & that of your family.

Lung cancer is related to 30% of all fatalities from all cancers. 90% of people contracting lung cancer is related to smoking. Smoking blackens the lungs, introduces some 4000 chemical substances into the body, many of which are toxic. Smoking also introduces 43 carcinogenic substances any one of which could cause cancer on it’s own.

Lung cancer is not the only cancer caused by smoking. You increase your risk of contracting cancers of the mouth, pancreas, urinary & bladder, kidney, stomach, esophagus & larynx.

75% of all deaths resulting from emphysema & bronchitis are related to smoking.

Your loved ones are at risk also. Children are especially at risk as they are still developing. Asthma, Sudden infant death syndrome, bronchitis, pneumonia & ear infections have all been linked to air born tobacco ingestion.

The unborn child can also be affected. Miscarriage, bleeding, nausea, reduced birth weights, & premature births are all known related risks. Children with parents who smoked during pregnancy can also suffer lifelong ailments & complications due to chest infections & asthma in particular.

It’s a bleak picture, if you don’t believe it’s this bad you need to experience sitting with your child all night wondering if the next breath is the last. If you do need to have some direct experience call on your GP or hospital & ask if it’s possible to visit a ward caring for lung patients. If that’s too much just do the imagining next…

When I smoked I was heavy at some 30 a day. Most people smoke around 20 a day. Do the following calculation for today’s costs & your own consumption levels.

20 per day at £3.00 per packet. Average 30 days per month. Therefore the Total monthly spend = 3 x 30 = £90 per month

Did you know that £90 per month will pay for a new car over 5 years.

It will more than double most peoples pension fund.

It could finance a part time business with potential earnings greater than your full time income. Let your imagination create your financial future, after becoming totally debt free, what next?

You may just simply want a <>! Do this final exercise before moving on & you may not regret it, ever!

Lie down or sit in a comfortable chair. Relax deeply by imagining each muscle relaxing in turn. Start with your eye muscles, your face muscles & neck muscles. Just let them relax & enjoy the experience. Now allow that relaxed feeling spread down your arms, down through your body, then on down your legs to your feet. Now intensify the relaxed state by counting down from 10 to one in your mind. After each third number state the words “deeper & deeper relaxed” at zero imagine yourself drifting into your smoke free healthy prosperous future & allow yourself to see experience & feel a bright happy healthy future. Take your time to enjoy before returning. Know that when you open your eyes you are fully wide awake.
